The Neighbourhood Sauna X Focus Pocus Group Photography Exhibition.
Hey pals, thanks for checking out your invitation to participate in our latest group film photography exhibition! This one is in collaboration with the wonderful folks at The Neighbourhood Sauna and finds the space between the shared perspectives and approaches between their work and ours - an exhibition that invites you to be reflective, mindful and purposeful with yourself and what you create.
I'm sure The Neighbourhood Sauna will be familiar with a lot of you. A staple of Fremantle; they've provided various spaces of well-being and community over the past few years, whether that's been solo sessions at their studio space, or their coastal shared saunas, I know a lot of us shooting film locally have enjoyed the treasures of their services too.
Ash and Clancy, firm favourite customers and friends of ours, work at The Neighbourhood Sauna and we've worked together over the past while to devise of what we think is a pretty special, fun and exciting group exhibition opportunity that examines the space between our two local businesses - the ideologies and approaches we share, and how those may manifest in art and self.
The format for this exhibition is a little different to the past few years - whereas the past exhibitions have been an open call for submissions, we thought we'd extend the invites for this exhibition to friends of the lab and get an idea of what works are going into it before any sort of announcement or roll out.
The Neighbourhood Sauna recently opened up their new space in South Fremantle, and an enormous aspect of that space is soon to be open; the communal bath house. This'll expand their already beautiful establishment, and part of that expansion is a large feature wall that they'd like to exhibit art on!
We'd like to extend the invite to share 1-4 photographs of yours that you feel fit the loose themes of self-reflection, a sense of slowing down, introspection, healing and health, mindfulness and peacefulness. You can use photographs you've already had developed with us, or set out to take new works that fit the brief.
We've handpicked a selection of about 20 of you that we have discussed and feel your work resonates with these themes, so hopefully it's a good fit :)
We thought the slow, mindful process of analogue photography lines up with these ideas pretty neatly already, so it's a chance to consider works deeply and examine why you're making photographs, what that means about you, how it allows you to express yourself and what sort of space you need to be in to create freely.
We'll be having an Opening Night for the event tentatively in late July, and ask you have your 1-4 photographs submitted by the end of June.
Thanks for reading all this! A little wordy, but hopefully an exciting proposal and chance to continue to grow and foster local community and celebrate art, good health and yourselves ! xoxoxo
